Why Choose Bell Road Dentistry for TMJ Therapy?
TMJ Expertise
Our team has advanced training in diagnosing and treating temporomandibular joint disorders.
Conservative Approach
We prioritize the least invasive treatments first, using custom appliances and therapy before considering surgery.
Comprehensive Evaluation
We look at bite alignment, muscle tension, sleep habits, and stress to find the root cause of your pain.
What Is TMJ/TMD?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jawbone to your skull on each side of your face. When this joint or the surrounding muscles become inflamed, injured, or misaligned, it leads to a condition known as temporomandibular disorder (TMD).
Symptoms range from mild clicking and popping when you open your mouth to severe pain, lockjaw, chronic headaches, and earaches. TMD can be caused by injury, teeth grinding, arthritis, stress, or bite misalignment.

Custom Oral Appliance Therapy
One of the most effective treatments for TMD is a custom-made oral appliance, sometimes called a splint or night guard. This device is worn over your teeth to reposition the jaw, reduce clenching pressure, and allow the joint and muscles to heal.
Unlike over-the-counter mouth guards, our appliances are fabricated from precise impressions of your teeth for a comfortable, accurate fit that delivers real therapeutic results.
Bite Adjustment & Equilibration
Sometimes TMD pain is caused by an uneven bite that places excessive stress on certain teeth and the jaw joint. Bite adjustment, or equilibration, involves carefully reshaping the biting surfaces of select teeth to distribute forces evenly across your entire bite.
This is a conservative, painless procedure that can provide significant relief for patients whose TMD is related to occlusal (bite) imbalance. We use digital bite analysis to identify problem areas with precision.

Lifestyle & Supportive Therapies
Managing TMD effectively often involves a combination of clinical treatment and lifestyle modifications. We may recommend jaw exercises to strengthen and stretch the muscles, along with heat and cold therapy to reduce inflammation.
Stress management is also a key component, as many patients unconsciously clench their jaw during periods of high stress. Our team works with you to develop a personalized plan that addresses both the symptoms and the underlying causes of your TMD.
